Summer Food Service
FREE SUMMER MEALS for children age 1-18 will be offered at a variety of locations in 2018.
The USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was created to ensure children could continue to receive nutritious meals during summer vacation, when they do not have access to school breakfast or lunch. District 191 participates in this program and sites vary each year. Meals are provided to all children, age 1-18, free of charge. Free meals must be consumed on site. Adults may purchase meals for themselves. Children do not have to be from District 191 to participate. Public school district Food Service departments that receive state and federal funding must have a self-supporting budget and receive no funds from the general education fund or tax levies. Funding for the summer feeding program is provided by the USDA. For more information, please call the Food & Nutrition Services Department at 952-707-2051 or 952-707-2030
FAQs (frequently asked questions)
Do children need to be enrolled in the district in order to participate? No. There is no other qualification for children age 1-18 to receive free meals.
Can children eat breakfast at one site and lunch at another site? Yes. Children may receive up to 1 free breakfast and 1 free lunch daily. All locations require that children eat meals on site.
What is included in a summer breakfast or lunch?
Summer breakfast includes 2 different grain items, 4 oz 100% fruit juice, and 8 oz milk. Lunch includes an entree, fruit, vegetable, and 8 oz milk. The summer meals follow different regulations than during the academic school year and therefore might look different on a menu.
Can adults eat meals at the sites?
Yes. Adults may purchase their own meal at a site and may not eat any food from a child’s tray. This rule is enforced at all sites to make sure that the children receive the nutritional benefits of the program. Adult breakfast costs $2.25 and lunch costs $4.00.
